Golden State Café Opens!

It’s been in the works for quite some time, but after a whole lot of hassle (thanks, City of Los Angeles restaurant permit process!) it has opened its doors. After checking out BoHo Jackie and I made a quick stop off at G-State, the new restaurant from Man Bites World regular, folk hero Jason Bernstein and his cohort, James Starr (who is, bizarrely enough, an alumni, along with myself and Top Chef finalist Stefan Richter, of Enoteca Drago in Beverly Hills).

The restaurant was packed last night, and I even ran into a lot of fellow bloggers who were at BoHo earlier. It’s an order-at-the-counter-and-grab-a-table kind of place, whose menu is geared around burgers, sandwiches, sausages and dogs (from Let’s Be Frank). They also offer some excellent beers, courtesy of beer aficionado/superstar J. Bernstein and ice cream from the über popular Scoops on Heliotrope. Those last two forces can even be combined, as they offer beer floats.

I was able to get my hands on their tasty burger (served with arugula and brown sugar glazed bacon), a surprisingly mellow jalapeño cole slaw, their own flavorful version of a muffaletta, the refreshing Persian cucumber salad with shahi and lemon, and some very tender fried sweet potato wedges, all washed down nicely with a pint of Racer 5.

It was just day 1 at Golden State, but if it’s any kind of precedent, they’re gonna be busy. To see my bad, but roughly legible enlarged picture of their menu, click here

    Hi Noah,

Excellent news! :) Can’t wait to try it (hopefully this week).

Great article. I can’t wait to try this place, hopefully Sunday for lunch before visiting LACMA.

Which are better in your opinion. The fries or the sweet potato wedges? Both look promising.

wondering how their sausages compare to Wurstkuche? That burger doesn’t “look” half bad.. at least arugula is a hearty green that doesn’t immediately roast to goop when heated.

My friends and I visited a couple weekends ago and had a great time sampling a little bit of everything. Although, I will have to go back and try their muffaletta, as Jason recommended. I’m a fan of their sweet potato fries. :)

Btw, Jason and I got to chat quite a bit and bonded while sharing our connection to you and participating on your blog. Great guy!

I’m glad you could make it! He’s an awesome guy.
