On Bibimbap

I’ve had a lot of bibimbap in my life, and while I’ve always enjoyed it, I’ve never really craved it. When it comes to more basic Korean, I’d always rather dig into a bowl of soon tofu than a mini-cauldron of dolsot bibimbap. But I also hadn’t been to any of the supposed best places around town.
I tried to rectify that, and headed over to a place I’d heard is one of the best— Jeon Ju.

My brother had the vegetarian version and I had the kalbi, but we both walked away a little disappointed. It wasn’t bad in any way, but just didn’t really stand out as much more than a bowl of relatively crispy-bottomed rice with some fairly basic tasting meat and vegetables— despite any amount of additional saucing.

I will add, though, that after reading a particularly glowing yelp review about their black cod stewed with daikon, garlic and soy, that we decided to check that out too and found it to be very tasty. Regardless of a little bit of bone work that had to be done on the fish, it was really, very nice.

But as for the bibimbap…is there something I’m missing? Is there somewhere else I should have gone? What do you guys think?
