Beacon, Lettuce and Tomato
I was going to meet my dad for lunch in Culver City, and decided to finally, after hearing many good things, give Beacon a try. We followed The Goldmeister’s advice, and after sucking down a couple of arnold palmers (or are they capitalized Arnold Palmers, even though it’s just a beverage?), ordered the seared albacore BLT and the hangar steak with wasabi relish and olive oil/scallion smashed potatoes.
The BLT was simple, precise and quite tasty. The seared albacore was tender and went really nicely with the wasabi and crispy bacon. A great example of a well thought out dish with a good combination of flavors that didn’t get over complicated.
The hangar steak was nice too, but didn’t totally pop out for me. The sauce was thick, sweet, and not too overpowering, and the wasabi relish offered a decent balance. I also really liked the scallions in the smashed potatoes. But ultimately, there was a certain heaviness to the dish that didn’t quite get abated to my liking by the relish. Ultimately, while I did enjoy the dish, I wouldn’t crave it— and I’m a man who yearns for cravings.
But that ABLT…yeah. I could crave that.
